Officials: Arrests possible in Greenwich swastika case

GREENWICH - Officials say the four teenagers who allegedly painted an 11-foot swastika on Guilford Lane last weekend are students at Greenwich High School.

Police are talking to prosecutors about making arrests in the case. According to authorities, the crime will most likely be treated as vandalism rather than as a hate crime because it didn't target a specific group.

While some neighbors say painting the swastika was merely a prank, Rabbi Andy Sklarz, of Greenwich Reformed Synagogue, says any symbols or pejorative words that suggest hate against any minority should be taken seriously.

Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei and local residents have stressed that this was a one-off act of vandalism, and they don't want it to taint the neighborhood's reputation.

The accused teens are expected to be in court later this month.
