BRIDGEPORT - A young child was killed and her mother was injured when a fire broke out at a Bridgeport condominium complex early Sunday morning.

Police say 20-year-old Chakierah Booker woke up to discover flames ripping through the home at the Greentree Condominiums complex on Frenchtown Road at around 3 a.m.

There were four children and two adults home at the time of the fire.

Police say Shaneese Pettway, the mother of 3-year-old Sincere Pettway, was also awakened by the fire and tried desperately to save her young child.

Sincere was on the second floor of the home, and had crawled out of her crib. Authorities say she was found on the floor, and despite efforts by emergency crews to save her, she was pronounced dead.

Mayor Joe Ganim, who grew up down the road, spoke with News 12 Connecticut at the scene after meeting with the family. "It's a tragic loss of a young infant," he said. "Our prayers go out to the family."

Ganim also praised the heroic efforts of police and firefighters, who he said made every effort to search the building for the child.

Investigators say there were no working smoke detectors in the family's home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigations, although officials believe it sparked in the kitchen.
