BRIDGEPORT - State and local leaders say they have a new plan to improve security at the Trumbull Gardens Housing Complex in Bridgeport after Wednesday's shooting that left one person dead and injured eight others.

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch joined Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Police Chief Joe Gaudett in a news conference Friday, saying that they will ask for special funding to have surveillance cameras installed at the housing complex. They say the cameras will serve not only as a way of catching criminals after they commit a crime, but also as a deterrent.

"Security cameras are an invaluable source of evidence in situations like this one where apprehending the criminal is necessary, but also for prosecuting them successfully," said Blumenthal.

Officials say they will know by mid-summer when the cameras will be installed. In the meantime, police say that they have added extra patrols near the complex.

Police are seeking two gunmen in the shooting.

Four of the eight victims who were injured shooting remain hospitalized.

Police have identified the slain victim as 37-year-old Savonnie McNeil, of Shelton. McNeil's mother is a City of Bridgeport security guard, according to police.

At least one of the other victims was the son of a custodian who is also employed by the city.
