STRATFORD - Police are searching for the suspect accused of triggering a bomb scare at Stratford High School this morning.

Authorities received a report that a motorist dropped off an overturned garbage can in the middle of Main Street between Barnum and Broadbridge avenues at 9:30 a.m. Officials with the New Haven Bomb Squad were called in and examined the can. They concluded that nothing was suspicious.

Town Hall and nearby businesses were evacuated and students at the high school were moved to a certain area of the building for safety reasons. Students were on what officials called “stay-put mode,” where they did not change classes and could not go into the halls without supervision.

The scene was declared safe at 11:30 a.m.
