WESTPORT - A Westport couple is trying to raise money to transform their historic farm into a state-of-the-art environmental learning center.

Mike Aitkenhead and his family are trying to raise money to expand the Wakeman Town Farm into a modern-day organic lab. Aitkenhead, a Staples High School environmental science teacher, and his wife Carrie, who is also a teacher, moved to the farm in 2010 after 90-year-old Pearl Wakeman passed away. The couple started after-school programs and summer camps, and even used the farm for hands-on lessons for Staples students.

The couple wants to make renovations that would include a classroom and teaching kitchen, so kids can pick, prepare and eat the food all in one experience.

The goal is to raise $150,000 for the renovations. They hope to break ground in the fall.
