Parents protest closing of Stamford magnet school

STAMFORD - ?Save Our Schools? was the message of more than a dozen parents in Stamford Monday as they protested in front of the government center.

The protesters are against the proposed closure of Toquam Magnet Elementary School. Many parents say Toquam Magnet is the only school in Stamford that is complying with the ?No Child Left Behind Act,? so they can?t figure out why the school board wants to shut it down.

?It's been really a fantastic successful school for decades, and I'm just not ready to give up. I think it's a great school and I'm not ready to see it go,? parent Nicole Sandford says.

Toquam Magnet is one of five schools the board recommended be shut down. Under the proposal, the students at Toquam Magnet would be relocated to the new inter-district magnet school that is currently being built. That school is scheduled to open in 2009.

School board members released this statement to News 12 Connecticut:

?The Redistricting Committee established several criteria before deciding which schools should be closed, among them are balancing the school racially, increasing the number of walkers, minimizing fiscal impact and keeping school feeder patterns.?

A school board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Turner River School at 6:30 p.m.
