Police: Alejandro Velez, of Bridgeport, accused in city’s first homicide of 2014
BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police say a man is facing murder charges in connection to the city's first homicide of the year.
Police say a woman was found stabbed to death inside the bathroom of an apartment at 525 Palisade Ave. at around 10 p.m. Saturday.
They say 37-year-old Alejandro Velez was also found unresponsive on the living room floor. Velez was transported to Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition, where detectives charged him with murder.

Police say the apartment is rented by Velez's mother, who is currently in Florida. They told News 12 that Velez was barricaded inside.
His alleged motive for the homicide or how he was injured was not immediately clear. Police did not release the identity of the woman or her relationship with Velez.
He's being held on a $1 million bond.
Officials say Velez has an extensive criminal history, including charges for arson and assaulting an officer.
