STAMFORD - Police say that a witness mistook a box that was thrown into the trunk of a car at Stamford Town Center earlier this afternoon for a child.

Officials say they were able to track down the owner of the 1998 black Honda Civic to a man in Brooklyn who had lent his car to a father living in Stamford. Police say the witness recanted his story, admitting he was no longer sure of what he had seen.

Detectives combed through surveillance video from the parking garage, but say they did not find anything useful for the investigation.
