Police: Bridgeport man Alejandro Velez fatally stabbed girlfriend Tinese Benson before trying to kill himself

BRIDGEPORT - Police plan to pursue murder charges against a Bridgeport man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death Saturday night.

Police say Alejandro Velez, 37, fatally stabbed his girlfriend, 28-year-old Tinese Benson, and then tried to kill himself by overdosing on pills.

The alleged attack happened at Velez's mother's home in the Bishop Curtis elderly apartment community while the mother was in Florida. Police say they were called to the scene by Velez's sister, who was unable to contact her brother, as he had barricaded himself inside the apartment.

Velez remains unconscious at Bridgeport Hospital. Police say he has an extensive criminal history that includes arson and assaulting an officer.

The death is Bridgeport's first murder of the year.
