NORWALK - Police say a Bridgeport woman stole money from the disabled in Norwalk and Fairfield to support her drug and alcohol habits.

According to Michelle Cheverette's arrest-warrant statement, she said, "I saw an opportunity to take from clients and took advantage of it. I feel that a lack of supervision on the upper management's part is what enabled me to get away with this. I can not say for sure how much exactly I took."

News 12 Connecticut spoke with one of the alleged victims, who says she trusted Cheverette with her finances as part of the program offered at CLASP Homes Incorporated, a Westport-based organization that helps the disabled.

Police say the money has been returned to the victims, who say they're both angered and saddened about the situation.

Cheverette is due back in court on Dec. 7.
