DARIEN - Darien police say a convicted child rapist was found sleeping in the woods near Cherry Lawn Park with a machete in his possession.

Police say Brian Cook, 35, told them he was passing through the area on a walk from Denver to Maine in honor of his daughter who died of leukemia.

Police, however, learned he is a fugitive from justice in Idaho and has an outstanding warrant for raping a 1-year-old. Cook is also listed on the National Sex Offender Registry, according to police.

Police believe Cook was trying to leave the country to avoid a lengthy prison term.

Cook is being held at Bridgeport Correctional Facility to await extradition to Idaho.
