WESTPORT - State police are cracking down on texting and driving over the next two weeks, beginning Monday.

It's all part of the "U DRIVE. U TEXT. U PAY." initiative.

Texting while driving can garner a $150 fine for a first offense, $300 for a second violation and $500 for each violation after that.

Police say fines are even higher if someone is caught texting and driving in a work zone.

Westport police say that texting and driving is one of the leading causes of accidents in the town.

More than 50 cities and towns are taking part in this crackdown, including Norwalk, Milford and Stratford.

The last statewide texting and driving campaign took place in April. During that month, Westport police say they issued nearly 300 tickets.
