BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police say a man is in critical condition after being struck by a woman in an SUV who fled the scene.

The incident happened Tuesday night on North Avenue near Lindley Street, where police say the victim lived.

Police tell News 12 the victim, 52-year-old Felix Rivera was crossing the street from a nearby parking lot to get to his apartment when he was hit by a woman driving at a high speed.

Police say the woman continued driving, disobeyed traffic lights and witnesses and also struck another car as she fled the scene. Investigators say someone tried to follow the woman down the street, but was unsuccessful.

"What we do know is that the pedestrian was walking into the roadway, one vehicle did stop, and it appears that the driver of the Chevy SUV went around the stopped vehicle and struck the pedestrian," says Capt. Brian Fitzgerald.

Police and city officials originally told News 12 Connecticut that Rivera had died, but now say he is in critical condition.

Police say the debris left behind belonged to the car that had driven away. They also found shoes at the scene that belong to Rivera.

A few witnesses say the driver was distracted at the time of the incident.

Police say they are looking at surveillance video gathered from several businesses in the area.

In addition, they are urging anyone with information to contact the Bridgeport Police Department.
