STAMFORD - A Stamford man is facing charges after police say they confiscated illegal fireworks and dangerous explosives from his home.

Police say they were tipped off to the stash after neighbors called in complaints. A monthlong investigation ended with a raid at the home on Westhill Road yesterday afternoon, and the homeowner, 68-year-old Jerome Kijek, was arrested.

Investigators say they recovered both legal and illegal fireworks that were being improperly stored in the home. They also found hand grenades and other explosives, and nearly $64,000.

Neighbors were shocked to hear of the arrest. Some told News 12 Connecticut that despite the arrest, Kijek and his family have been good neighbors.

Police say the community is much safer now that the fireworks have been confiscated. Authorities say they may pursue federal charges against Kijek.
