Police: Health care worker stole dying woman's jewelry

FAIRFIELD - Police say a health care worker given the chance to say a final goodbye to an elderly patient used the opportunity to steal the woman's jewelry.

Police say Shantel Rivera, 37, of Windsor, admitted to taking the $750 necklace and pendant from the neck of an 83-year-old dying woman at the woman's house in Fairfield Friday. Rivera brought the necklace to the Fairfield Police Department, where she was arrested on Saturday.

"We're not talking about a necklace that cost thousands of dollars, but to that family it's priceless," says Lt. James Perez, of the Fairfield Police Department.

Rivera was released on a promise to appear in court on Monday.
