STAMFORD - Stamford police launched a new initiative Wednesday to further increase communication with the city's Hispanic population.

Police say all information that will be given to the public, such as fliers and Facebook posts, will be translated into Spanish.

News 12 Connecticut spoke with people of the Spanish-speaking community who say they fear police because of the language barrier as well as many being afraid of being deported.

Day laborer Robert Martinez says the new initiative is a great first step that benefits everyone.

"It's going to really help us to see the police more as a protection other than discrimination," says Martinez.
