BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police ordered special patrols to protect the public during the city's cold emergency on Sunday.

Lt. William Mayer says his goal was to make sure anybody who needed shelter got it.

Mayer refers homeless people to local shelters like Prospect House and the Bridgeport Rescue Mission.

“We're just going around, check[ing] and [making] sure everybody's OK,” he says.

Another part of Meyer's patrol is on foot, at local warming centers like the downtown bus terminal.

Police say cold weather patrols will continue until the temperature warms up.
