FAIRFIELD - Fairfield police say they have arrested the man responsible for 16 attempted burglaries that occurred shortly after Hurricane Sandy last year.

Police say Robert Smith targeted more than a dozen commercial businesses that had no electricity at the time because of the storm. One of the buildings that was targeted was the Patriot National Bank on Black Rock Turnpike. Police say Smith left hand prints throughout the lobby after smashing the front door and a window in the building.

In many of the robberies, Smith allegedly went after cash registers in the establishments, which range from golf courses to diners.

Officials say they have linked the suspect to burglaries in at least three other southwestern Connecticut communities.
