SHELTON - Shelton police are searching for the vandals who broke into a Catholic church and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

A custodian at St. Margaret Mary Church on Long Hill Avenue discovered the vandalism early Monday morning. The suspects broke the right arm off a Jesus statue, threw oil across the walls and floors and destroyed a $10,000 bingo machine. Father John Stronkowski also says his new car was covered in paint.

The church's priest says the vandals broke through a back door.
