STAMFORD - Stamford police took a man into custody after a three-hour standoff at a boarding house Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to the corner of Waverly Place and Fairfield Avenue after getting reports of a man walking up and down the streets with a gun and a beer can.

They say the man then barricaded himself inside his second-floor room when they arrived.

Police say he's a Marine veteran with some mental issues.

News 12 spoke with one of his housemates, who said the man had only lived at the boarding house for a month or two.

Police called in the special response team and hostage negotiators to try to talk him out.

They say the man surrendered peacefully at around noon.

Police have not released the man's name or potential charges.
