STAMFORD - A longtime Stamford post office is set to close after nearly a century of serving the community.

The facility on Atlantic Street will shut down Friday at 5 p.m. because the building was sold, according to U.S. Postal Service representatives. It had been operational for 97 years.

Residents say they're shocked by the closure and have been flocking to the post office to collect last bits of mail. Anyone with a PO box can pick up their mail at the post office on West Avenue until a new location is determined.

It is unclear what will be built at the old location.
