Principal awaits fate after 'cupcake incident'

GREENWICH - The principal of a Greenwich elementary school is awaiting his fate after he was suspended, with pay, over a confrontation about birthday treats.

The Greenwich Board of Education met with Glenville School Principal Mark D'Amico to discuss the May 6 incident. A father says he tried to drop off some birthday treats for his daughter when D'Amico told him it was against school policy.

The father says other parents have dropped off cupcakes in the past and he felt singled out.

After the incident, the father says he checked the online handbook and noticed a new passage that states: "Parents, in order to minimize distractions to our 'teaching/learning' environment, I ask that cupcakes be brought in first thing in the morning. Parents are not permitted into the classroom for birthday celebrations in order to minimize distractions."

Now, many parents are wondering if D'Amico was suspended over the cupcakes or over the quick change to school policy. The board would only say it has to do with "serious allegations."

D'Amico's attorney, John Gesmonde, attempted to shed some more light on the situation.

"The school representative did not feel and neither does Mark at this point?that he was as candid as he could have been with them as to when he amended it and that's what really seems to be the sore point," says Gesmonde.

The decision on D'Amico's job now lies with the school superintendent.

The father at the center of the controversy says he wasn't even trying to drop off cupcakes. He says the whole thing started over ice cream.
