FAIRFIELD - The public is getting a chance this evening to weigh in on Aquarion Water Company's proposed rate hike.

Dozens of people turned out for the public hearing, which was held tonight in Fairfield. The meeting was held to discuss a rate hike that officials say would cause rates to jump every year for the next three years.

Aquarion officials say the money is needed for aging infrastructure. The company admits this increase, which would raise rates 18 percent in the first year, is one of the highest it has ever proposed.

First Selectman Mike Tetreau, who opposes the increase, was among the attendees at Fairfield Warde High School tonight.

The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority will have final say on the issue. If the rate increase goes into effect, customers would see the change on their bills this fall.
