Rally held in Bridgeport to save tech school

BRIDGEPORT - A rally was held today at a state vocational-tech school in Bridgeport that is slated for some deep cuts.

Nearly 100 faculty members and students from Bullard-Havens Technical High School marched along Palisades Avenue chanting, "Save our school!" Protesters say they are also showing support for other local technical schools facing similar cuts.

Due to the state budget crisis, Gov. Dannel Malloy (D-Conn.) has decided to eliminate many programs at vocational schools, including sports, music and adult education classes. The plan would also include layoffs.

In a statement released tonight on behalf of the state's acting education commissioner, Malloy says he's working to try and finance the fall sports programs at vocational schools across the state.

Officials say they hope all cuts will be taken off the table if state unions can ratify a $1.6 billion concession deal by Aug. 17.
