STAMFORD - After 35 years, the owner of Plants and Florist in Stamford will be closing its doors, unable to survive the recession.Owner Barbara Shanen says she's done everything she can to stay afloat when she realized people were no longer spending money on flowers. Shanen says she cut staff, cut hours and created drastic discounts. Shanen says she's constantly asking people to support local florists, but small shops like hers can't compete with corporate order gatherers that buy in bulk. She says after all this time she can't believe that her best option is to close her doors for good this year. Shanen is not alone. Many florists in southwestern Connecticut are contacting her trying to sell their equipment and goods because they're closing as well. A date for the store?s closing had not been set, as Shanen hopes for a miracle.
