Rell asks Obama for flood's disaster declaration

HARTFORD - (AP) - Gov. M. Jodi Rell has asked PresidentBarack Obama to declare a major disaster following floods insouthwestern and southeastern Connecticut last month.

Rell said she acted after the Federal Emergency ManagementAgency and state Department of Emergency Management and HomelandSecurity assessed losses and expenses in Fairfield and New Londoncounties.

The governor says an initial survey found public sector costs inthe two counties were at least $11 million due to the storms ofMarch 12-14 and March 29-30.

Rell says her request may be updated to include other countiessuch as Middlesex and Windham and additional programs, suchfinancial assistance to eligible individuals and households whohave uninsured losses.

Final amounts of individual losses should soon be ready.
