HARTFORD - Gov. Jodi Rell has backed off a plan to shut down several lines of Metro-North.

Last week, the governor suggested the state could save $33,000,000 by shutting down the Waterbury, Danbury and New Canaan lines and reroute the savings to a winter heating assistance program.

In a statement yesterday though, Rell flatly ruled out the cuts, saying that funding for the heating program would have to be found someplace else.
