Rep. Himes: Ariz. shooting was assault on American democracy

WESTPORT - Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District) told area residents at a brown-bag lunch in Westport today that this weekend?s shooting rampage in Arizona was an assault on the core of American democracy.

Police say Jared Loughner went on a rampage at a political gathering in Tucson, Ariz. Saturday.  Six people were killed and 14 people were wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

Himes told the crowd he's conscious of the fact that what happened to Giffords, whom he called a friend, can happen to any elected official. He also said he doesn't want security measures that will create more distance between the American people and their elected officials.

The congressman says he will continue to talk with constituents at public events, but says the attack will be in the back of his mind.
