WASHINGTON, D.C. - A new report says Connecticut is tied for last in the nation in funding programs that prevent kids from smoking.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say Connecticut is one of five states that did not budget funds for tobacco prevention programs this year.

The CDC says this year Connecticut will collect $509 million in revenue from the 1998 tobacco settlement and tobacco taxes, but will spend none of it on tobacco prevention programs.

Government officials say the state should be spending almost $44 million a year on anti-smoking campaigns.
