Connecticut lawmakers are condemning Russian actions after receiving reports that a Russian spy ship was spotted patrolling off the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut.

GROTON - Connecticut lawmakers are condemning Russian actions after receiving reports that a Russian spy ship was spotted patrolling off the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut.

A spokesperson from the United States Department of Defense confirmed Wednesday afternoon they are aware of a Russian intelligence ship, the Viktor Leonov, in international waters.

They say the ship was spotted off the coast of Delaware Tuesday.

While the Department of Defense says the ship has not violated international law, lawmakers, including Sen. Chris Murphy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, have issued statements saying it's part of a series of actions by Russia that threaten national security.

Lawmakers say they are also looking at this as part of a series of aggressive actions that Russia has recently taken. They say Russian jets flew fast and low above a U.S. Navy ship in the Black Sea a few days ago. They say if these actions continue, they could threaten global peace.

Sacred Heart University professor Gary Rose says that pressure now falls on President Donald Trump to take a tougher stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"It's actually Trump's first major foreign policy test as a commander-in-chief," Rose says.

Lawmakers say they are continuing to monitor the situation closely and working with the Department of Defense and the U.S. Coast Guard.
