WILTON - Residents across southwestern Connecticut marched in parades and held ceremonies to honor their local veterans today.

Wilton celebrated Veterans Day by dedicating a new monument. The town says it donated the land and local citizens and organizations donated money to build the memorial. The memorial bears the name of Wilton residents who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Darien High School held a special flag-raising ceremony to honor soldiers this morning. Dozens of veterans from several wars attended the ceremony, as students and school officials read a list of former students who served in the military.

The city of Norwalk also celebrated Veterans Day today with a ceremony at City Hall. Several veterans from all branches of the military told their stories to the gathering of residents. Officials say they dedicated the ceremony to the memory of Fred Gotchem, a World War II veteran who passed away last month.
