FAIRFIELD - With more snow expected this week, many in southwestern Connecticut are worried about heavy snow on their roofs.

Workers at Poster Hardware and Housewares on Black Rock Turnpike say customers are coming in looking for roof rakes, which are used to clear snow from roofs. The store’s owner says more homeowners should be equipped to deal with snow accumulations each winter.

Contractors say it's common to see snow and ice build up on people's roofs and then clog gutters. They say when heat rises from the home, water has no place to go but under the roof shingles.

Officials say many homes in Connecticut experience leaking this time of year. Hardware store owners say too often customers wait until it's too late before investing in a roof rake.

Roof rakes cost about $60 and can be found at most hardware stores.
