NEWTOWN - A teacher who survived December's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School has started a program that's helped her students work through the tragedy.

First-grade teacher Kaitlin Roig gained worldwide attention for hiding her 15 students in a bathroom as gunman Adam Lanza killed 26 people before taking his own life. Roig says she and her students still get startled when they hear any sudden noise at the school.

To help her students cope, Roig collaborated with psychotherapist Maud Purcell to start Classes 4 Classes, a nonprofit that encourages children to help others through random acts of kindness. Roig says she was inspired by all the gifts sent from around the world to Newtown in the wake of the shooting.

"I realized that if I wasn't teaching my kids that when you get, you have to give, then I was dropping the ball," says Roig. Her class began the program by sending money to help other students.

Roig says starting the program has helped both herself and her students with the healing process after the shooting.
