STAMFORD - A school bus was one of nearly a dozen vehicles hit by a truck driver who went careening down East Main Street in Stamford this afternoon.

Police say a 30-year-old Christopher Simonelli stole a box truck from his work place on Myrtle Avenue. They say he hit cars, garbage cans and parking meters as he sped down the street, finally stopping after he struck the school bus.

Officials shut down the road between Glenbrook Road and Myrtle Avenue for hours as they worked to clear up the mess.

Police say nearly two dozen people were sent to the hospital, including Simonelli, who had been trapped inside his crumpled truck.
