NORWALK - Sen. Richard Blumenthal says Metro-North has been fined more than $500,000 in safety violations over the course of the last decade.

He says the sanctions point to a shameful record for the railroad.

"The level of fines nowhere near matches the severity of the safety violations, and that may have been part of the problem because they fail to deter," Blumenthal says.

He is now calling on the Federal Railroad Administration to impose stiffer penalties on Metro-North, similar to how airlines are regulated.
