WASHINGTON - Democrats in the Senate are claiming victory after Sen. Chris Murphy's 15 hour-long filibuster ended with a commitment from Republican leaders to vote on two proposals that would strengthen gun laws.

Murphy began speaking around 11 a.m. yesterday and refused to give up the floor until Republicans agreed to consider a vote.

He told lawmakers that he could not continue with "business as usual" after another mass shooting -- referencing the Orlando terror attack Sunday where 49 people lost their lives.

Murphy said he was motivated by the fact that there has been zero gun law reform since the Newtown school shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults.

Murphy said Republicans have agreed to vote on amendments that would expand background checks and ban gun sales to suspected terrorists.

Murphy said he thinks, this time, these laws might actually pass even though they did not after Sandy Hook and several other mass shootings since then.

At a news conference Thursday, Murphy said he's seen Republicans moving on gun control this week -- hoping to find some common ground after the Orlando shootings.

It's not clear when Congress might take a vote on those two measures.

Republicans are also expected to put forth their own proposals, so both sides could be far apart on actually reaching a deal. Donald Trump said he plans to meet with the NRA about banning people on a watch list from buying guns.
