BRIDGEPORT - Sen. Richard Blumenthal chaired a Senate committee today on what can be done to prevent future train accidents.
The hearing follows last month's collision of two Metro-North trains in Bridgeport.
Sen. Blumenthal says the goal of today's hearing was to get a better idea of challenges facing railways nationwide.

Among those challenges, officials agree, are old rails that are in need of a major upgrade.
Sen. Blumenthal says old rails were responsible for the accident that took place in Bridgeport last month. News 12 reports that Blumenthal appeared convinced that a track inspection performed two days before the collision forecast the derailment as inevitable.
Metro-North officials were not present at today's hearing, but they issued a statement saying they're working with the National Transportation Safety Board on its investigation into the cause of the accident.
