NORWALK - The state's two U.S. senators lauded a new federal transportation bill Friday, which will send Connecticut $3.5 billion over five years.

The Department of Transportation has not yet decided how to spend it all.

It could fund the replacement of a notorious drawbridge in Norwalk that has gotten stuck on occasion and stranded Metro-North commuters.

The money could also go toward safety improvements on the rail system. Two years ago, Metro-North foreman Robert Luden died while working on the tracks.

"Robert Luden would be alive today if there were, at the time he was working in West Haven, a system of redundant protection," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

The senators say widening Interstate 95 is also high on the list, which would boost construction jobs.
