Severe flooding causes evacuations in Westport

WESTPORT - Flooding caused the evacuations of a number of Westport homeowners today.

The Saugatuck River overflowed its banks this morning and forced police to block off about a four-block stretch of Canal Street near the intersection of Main and Canal Woods.

Firefighters say they had to rescue some residents on nearby Woods Grove Road from the rising floodwaters using a specially adapted military vehicle.

First Selectman Gordon Joseloff opened the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the town's response.

Fire officials are urging residents with flooding to turn off power to prevent any possible electrical mishaps.
