HARTFORD - Former U.S. Rep. Chris Shays says he will not run for governor in 2010.

Shays told the Associated Press that he "simply can't make it work financially."

The Republican says he would be nearly bankrupt if he quit his job and spent four years in office.

Shays served more than 20 years in Congress before losing to Jim Himes in the last election.

Shays now works for an independent legislative commission studying wartime contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
