STAMFORD - A Stamford elementary school was transformed into a department store Sunday to help low-income families with their back-to-school needs.

Nearly 150 elementary students participated in the shopping spree at the Davenport Ridge Elementary School. The school's gym was transformed into a department store for the day, where students mixed and matched outfits and filled their shopping bags with items for the upcoming school year.

Event co-chairs Meryl Japha and Jane Levine say everything was free.

Organizers say more than 100 volunteers made the event possible.

They say they hope to make it a yearly event.
