STRATFORD - Workers at Stratford-based Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation say they are outraged that U.S. taxpayers could soon be paying for $300 million worth of Russian helicopters bound for Afghanistan.

Pentagon officials say the U.S. plans to buy 30 Russian-built helicopters to be used by Afghan security forces.

Hundreds of workers are facing layoffs at Sikorsky, and some say that a contract to build the helicopters in the United States could have saved their jobs.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal is planning to issue a formal protest to the U.S. Secretary of Defense, along with a demand for Sikorsky to get the contract for the choppers.
