STAMFORD - The sister of the man accused of shooting a Stamford police officer says her brother was trying to protect her from an intruder.

Efraim Goitom's sister Lidia says he was protecting her from an intruder who threatened her and held a knife to her throat on Thursday. She says that it happened earlier in the day and her brother fought off the intruder.

Later that night, police came to their home to execute a search warrant. That's when police say Officer Richard Gasparino was shot through the door.

Lidia believes that her brother thought it was the intruder coming back to hurt her, but police say that they did identify themselves.

Goitom was charged earlier today with attempted murder and is being held on $2 million bond.
