Southwestern Conn. braces for Hanna

All eyes are on Tropical Storm Hanna, which left a swath of destruction in the Bahamas and is now working its way toward the Northeast.

NORWALK - All eyes are on Tropical Storm Hanna, which left a swath of destruction in the Bahamas and is now working its way toward the Northeast. The storm is expected to bring heavy winds and rain to the area over the weekend.

Officials from Westport, Milford and Fairfield have kept residents informed of their crews' preparations for the storm, including readying chainsaws and trucks. They say they'll meet with emergency responders and public works crews Saturday morning to update their plans of action.

Many southwestern Connecticut residents spent Friday stocking up on groceries in preparation for Saturday's storm. The assistant director of Shaw's in Stratford says bottled water and batteries are selling fast.

United Illuminating is also getting ready. It says its trucks are gassed, extra equipment is ready to go and crews will be on-call.

Connecticut's marinas are also preparing for Hanna. The director of Captain's Cove Marina in Bridgeport is encouraging people to check on their boats and tie their lines. He says the high winds could cause serious damage.

The Red Cross suggests residents who live in flood-prone areas put together an evacuation plan. A first aid kit, essential medications and canned food should also be easily accessible.

In the event of a power outage, the Red Cross suggests keeping a battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries handy.

News 12 Connecticut will be following the storm this weekend with updates from across the region.
