FAIRFIELD - Southwestern Connecticut residents say they are concerned for loved ones overseas after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake caused devastation in Japan.

Harry Sakamaki, president of the Japan Society of Fairfield County, says he sat vigilantly and watched Japanese television broadcast images of destruction left by the earthquake and tsunami.

He says that he was relieved to hear that his mother and sister, in Tokyo, were safe.

The Japan Society of Fairfield County says it plans to work with the Japanese Consulate General in New York City to help raise funds for the victims.
