MILFORD - Milford police say a female student from Jonathan Law High School has died after being stabbed by another student Friday morning.

Maren Sanchez, 16, was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police say a 16-year-old male student is in custody, but they are not releasing his name because he is a minor.

Students were released from school for the day at around 9:15 a.m. after the lockdown was lifted. They told News 12 the stabbing had to do with junior prom.

The students say the boy asked Sanchez to the junior prom and she rejected his invitation. He allegedly tried to strangle her, pushed her down the stairs and stabbed her in the throat in a stairwell on the first floor. Police are looking into the students' claims.

A teacher reportedly witnessed part of the attack and came to the aid of the stabbing victim. The teacher notified the Jonathan Law High School resource officer, who arrested the suspect shortly after the incident and notified Milford police. Police say the attacker did not resist arrest.

Officials say this was an isolated incident.

The suspect is currently in custody, and it has not been decided if he will be charged as an adult. Police say the suspect will be arraigned Monday. An attorney for the suspect says the accused killer is being held in a hospital under psychiatric evaluation, where he will likely remain for two weeks.

School officials say Sanchez was an athlete, honor student and all-around wonderful person. Grief counselors will be available at the school for students and staff next week.

The junior prom that was scheduled for Friday has been postponed to a later date.

Police expect to wrap up their investigation before the start of class Monday morning.
