STAMFORD - A car crashed into a utility pole in Stamford Saturday and caused the transformer to crack and leak, requiring the involvement of hazmat crews.

Witnesses say the driver crashed into the pole on Belltown Road by Fairland Street after having a seizure just before noon.

The force of the crash nearly snapped the pole in half. Oil from the pole?s transformer dripped on rescue workers as they helped the driver out of the car.

Utility crews say some of the oil in older transformers may contain toxic materials. Tests on the oil are under way.
