STAMFORD - Stamford EMTs had been carrying opioid-blocking drugs for a little more than two weeks when they got the chance to use them for the first time during the Fourth of July weekend.

The EMTs responded to a 911 call Friday about a young man who was unconscious and not breathing, reportedly from narcotics.

Responders performed rescue breathing and administered Narcan to the man, who then began to breath on his own.

"We can give it if we deem it necessary," said Stamford Fire Department Capt. Stuart Rieve. "The ambulance was a little bit far away, and it was lucky that we had the medication."

Fire officials also credit the victim's friend with saving the victim's life because the friend called for help immediately.
