STAMFORD - The Army Corp of Engineers closed Stamford's hurricane barrier in hopes of preventing Stamford's south end from flooding. Officials are hoping that the barrier will do its job and protect more than 600 acres from Hurricane Irene.

Neighboring Greenwich is also on the radar of officials, where an evacuation is being planned for all low-lying areas. A warning map has been issued for residents, showing streets that will be most vulnerable during the storm.

Shelters have been set up at the Western Civic Center and Eastern Middle School, both in Greenwich. Stamford High School will also be open should residents need to seek shelter from the storm.
