STAMFORD - City officials unveiled their new $15 million communications system Thursday, but still are trying to get it to cover the entire city.

Officials say the new 800 megahertz digital system will cover 95 percent of the city, compared to the old system, which covered just 80 percent.

Despite the early trouble, officials say they've increased the number of available channels from four to 10, and the number of sites increased, so coverage has improved over the older analog system.

"Our policemen and firemen and other emergency responders are safer than they've ever been," says Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy.

The new radio system is put together by Motorola. At the end of four years, Motorola plans to upgrade the entire system, from hardware to software, to ensure the radios remain as state-of-the-art as possible.
